The Staffy landed the 4th spot on Pet Insurance Australia’s list of most popular dogs for 2020. This comes as no surprise as this breed has an excellent temperament and makes a wonderful household companion. Below are four pawsome things about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier that many do not know.
#1 It is referred to as the “nanny dog”
With a great reputation as a guardian and playmate, the Staffy has earned itself the nickname “nanny dog.” This breed bonds with the entire family and loves every member equally. It adores children and is kind and patient towards them. When showered with love and affection, this dog will reciprocate.
The Staffy loves to spend time with the people it loves, whether watching television on the couch, doing errands, going for walks, or engaging in physical activities. It is a loyal dog that will follow you around wherever you go and sit beside you every chance it gets.
#2 It has been around for centuries
The Staffy is a cross between two extinct breeds: the Old English Bulldog and Old English Terrier. It originated in the 1800s – the time when blood sports, like bear baiting, cock fighting, and bull-baiting, were common in England. When blood sports were banned in 1835, the Staffy was used in dogfighting. On May 25, 1935, it was recognised by the UK Kennel Club.
#3 It is surprisingly gentle
One of the first things you are going to notice about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is its tough and rugged appearance. It has a stocky and muscular body, giving it a tenacious look. But do not be fooled – under its fierce exterior is a lover, not a fighter.
The Staffy is gentle and sweet. It loves to cuddle and be around its humans. It will snuggle with you when given the opportunity and will want to be as close to you as possible.
#4 It needs plenty of exercise
This fun-loving dog is very energetic especially in its younger years. It needs an average of between 60 and 90 minutes of exercise daily. This could be split into two to three brisk walks, not just a stroll around the block.
Activities, like fetch, hide and seek, and tug of war, will keep this dog physically and mentally stimulated. It will enjoy hiking, running, and playing games with you, and will even excel in basic obedience and trick training.
