When it comes to dog feeding, some Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners prefer to stick to pure Staffy puppy food, while others prefer to mix up their pet’s diet with either raw or cooked food. If you belong to the latter group and do not know which foods are suitable for your Staffy to eat, below is a list that will help you out.
#1 Chicken
Chicken is a common ingredient in most dog foods for a reason – it is safe, easily digestible, and healthy. This lean meat is high in protein but low in fat, making it a great addition to a well-rounded diet. It has omega-6 fatty acids that are good for your Staffy’s skin and coat.
Cooked chicken can be served on its own, mixed into your dog’s regular meal, or given as a treat. Bones should never be included, as they can puncture your pooch’s intestines or cause your pet to choke. If you are considering giving your Staffy raw chicken, it is recommended that you first consult with your vet due to the risk of salmonella or bacterial infection.
#2 Salmon
Because it is healthy, salmon is usually the fish that is used in fish oil supplements for pets. It is high in omega-6 fatty acids which support the immune system. It also makes a good alternative to chicken, especially if your Staffy is allergic to poultry.
Fresh and boneless salmon fillets are highly suggested, as they are not likely to have small bones. You can grill, steam, bake, roast, or poach the salmon, with or without seasonings. Never give your dog raw or undercooked salmon, as it may contain the Neorickettsia helminthoeca parasite which is life-threatening.
#3 Yoghurt
The best yoghurt for your Staffy is one that is natural or non-fat, as it is rich in protein and calcium. Because it has active bacteria, it can act as a probiotic, improving your dog’s digestive system.
Avoid flavoured yoghurts that contain added sweeteners, such as Xylitol, as they are poisonous to dogs. Make sure to read the ingredient labels carefully and consult with your veterinarian for proper serving suggestions.
#4 Apple
A wonderful addition to your Staffy’s diet, apples are rich in dietary fibres and vitamins A and C. These fruits help clean residue off your dog’s teeth and freshen its breath.
When feeding your pooch apple slices, make sure to always remove the core to avoid choking hazards. Take out the pips as well because they contain a low amount of cyanide which can have hazardous effects on your dog’s health when accidentally swallowed.
#5 Celery
Celery sticks contain vitamins A, B, C, and K; potassium; manganese; and folate. They are said to promote a healthy heart and freshen your Staffy’s breath.
Bear in mind that celeries should not be given as a meal replacement, but rather, as a treat. As a treat, it should not take up 10% of your dog’s daily diet to avoid weight gain.
